In an emergency, call 911
For fires, medical emergencies, crashes or any situation where lives or property are in danger, call 911 immediately. Get out first, then call.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area and inside every bedroom.
- Test your alarms once a month by pressing the test button.
- Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms outside sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
Have a home escape plan
- Know two ways out of every room.
- Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home.
- Practice your plan with everyone in your household at least twice a year.
- Once you are out, stay out. Never go back inside a burning building.
Prevent fires at home
Cooking
Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling, and keep anything that can burn away from the stovetop.
Heating
Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from space heaters, wood stoves and fireplaces. Have your chimney inspected every year.
Electrical
Don’t overload outlets or run cords under rugs. Replace damaged or frayed cords.
Outdoor burning
Check the weather and local rules before burning, never leave a fire unattended and keep water nearby. New York State bans residential brush burning in smaller towns from March 16 through May 14 each year.
Help us find you
Make sure your house number is easy to see from the road, day and night, from both directions. Reflective numbers at the end of your driveway can save valuable time in an emergency.
